Xacobean nautical crossing

The experience

There are two possible routes to do the Xacobean Nautical Crossing. The northern one with origin in the port of Ares or Ribadeo and the southern one, from the ports of Vigo or Baiona.

The experience is based on travelling the minimum of 90 nautical miles required by the church to recognise a maritime pilgrimage before heading to Santiago de Compostela through the Camino de la ría de Muros Noia, from the port of arrival, the Real Club Náutico de Portosín.

Whether you choose the North route, from the Cantabrian Sea, or the South route, from the Vigo Estuary, the Xacobean Nautical Crossing is a tour of the Galician nautical clubs that have most committed to quality and attention to sailors.

In addition to the best marinas and services, the restaurants of the nautical clubs that are part of the Xacobean Nautical Crossing are among the best in Galicia, offering you a 360º sailing and pilgrimage experience.

You can do the Xacobean Nautical Crossing with your own boat or rent one in the ports of Vigo, Baiona, Ares or Ribadeo.

Obtain the Compostela with Asnauga and the Xacobean Nautical Crossing

The Compostela is the main diploma of recognition of the status of pilgrim that the church grants to those who complete the Camino de Santiago by fulfilling a series of minimum conditions. There are four requirements for maritime pilgrimages:

  • Sailing, emulating historical maritime pilgrimages.
  • Following one of the historical routes recognised by the Church.
  • Travelling a minimum of 90 nautical miles.
  • Walking the last few kilometres of the entrance to Santiago.

To meet these requirements, the pilgrim makes his journey with the pilgrim’s credential, a passport in which he records at least twice a day (beginning and end of the day) his passage through the different towns on the Camino. To prove passage through a town, the stamp of any establishment, institution or church on the itinerary is valid.

The Northern Nautical Crossing

The Northern Route of the Xacobean Nautical Crossing lasts between 4 and 6 days, depending on the port of departure you choose. The closest port to the Camino de la ría de Muros-Noia that will allow you to accumulate the minimum 90 nautical miles to obtain the Compostela is Ares, otherwise, you can do it from Ribadeo, on the border between Galicia and Asturias.

Therefore, the ports with Q for tourist quality where you can have your pilgrim’s credential stamped are:

  • Club Náutico Ría de Ares
  • Club Náutico de Sada
  • Real Club Náutico de A Coruña
  • Real Club Náutico de Portosín, ya en la ría de Muros Noia.

From here you must travel to the town of Bertamiráns (Ames) by vehicle and after stamping your credential, continue on foot the last 12 km to Santiago de Compostela.

The Southern Nautical Crossing

The Southern Route of the Xacobea Nautical Crossing lasts between 3 and 4 days and the ports distinguished with the Q for tourist quality in which you must stop to seal your credential are:

  • Real Club Náutico de Vigo
  • Monte Real Club de Yates de Baiona
  • Real Club Náutico de Rodeira
  • Real Club Náutico de Sanxenxo
  • Real Club Náutico de Portonovo
  • Real Club Náutico de Riveira
  • Real Club Náutico de Portosín

And just like on the Northern Route, from Portosín you must travel to the town of Bertamiráns (Ames) by vehicle and after stamping your credential, continue on foot the last 12 km to Santiago de Compostela
